PEEK-OPTIMA® has fast become the material of choice for various biomaterial applications. Spinal implants, heart valve frames, various orthopaedic implants and trauma applications are just some of the areas where PEEK-OPTIMA® has proven success.
Produced and marketed by Invibio® Biomaterial Solutions (a wholly owned subsidiary of Victrex® PLC). The quality and consistency of PEEK-OPTIMA® material will be guaranteed indefinitely.
Traditional metallic implants can result in a phenomenon known as stress shielding. Stress shielding occurs when a stiff metallic implant tends to carry the majority of the load rather than the preferred load sharing scenario; where the bone and implant share the load carrying duties. When the metallic implant carries the majority of the load, the adjacent bone weakens over time. To achieve the desired load sharing for structural orthopaedic implants, it is critical to use an implant material with similar modulus to that of bone. Cortical bone has a modulus of 18 GPa. Titanium implants have a modulus of 110 GPa and PEEK-OPTIMA® grades can be custom tailored between 3 – 20 GPa.
AIP machines PEEK-OPTIMA® from extruded rod, extruded sheet, compression molded plaques and injection molded plaques. Injection molded PEEK-OPTIMA® finished parts can have varying areas of crystallinity due to variable cooling rates in areas of different cross sectional thickness. This varying crystallinity will affect material properties; therefore the machining process is the manufacturing process of choice for many PEEK-OPTIMA® implants.
AIP is ISO 13485: 2003, ISO 9001: 2008 certified and our dedicated PEEK-OPTIMA® machining, deburring and cleaning line have been validated. Through specialized machining techniques, AIP can machine various features such as micro-porosity to help improve the bore/implant interface thru additional in-growth areas.
Implants machined from PEEK-OPTIMA® offer modulus that mimics human bone, tailored radiolucency or opacity, excellent fusion, proven safety and biocompatibility, promotion of Osseointegration, and superior compressive strength.
